Our Curated Standard
We favor whole-food and plant-based nutrition whenever practical, while recognizing that some nutrients are best delivered through thoughtfully formulated supplements. Every product we carry is evaluated for its ingredients, formulation, and how well it aligns with our standards before we recommend it.
Why These Ingredients Matter
| Ingredient | Why |
|---|---|
| Turmeric Root / Curcuminoids | Turmeric contains curcumin and related curcuminoids, plant compounds extensively studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Curcumin can interact with free radicals and has been studied in relation to oxidative stress and cellular protection.1 |
| Quercetin | A flavonoid naturally found in foods including onions, capers and leafy vegetables. Quercetin has demonstrated antioxidant activity, including scavenging of reactive oxygen species and interaction with pathways involved in oxidative stress.2,3 |
| Japanese Knotweed Extract / Trans-Resveratrol | Japanese knotweed is a botanical source of resveratrol. Cell Shield RTQ uses an extract standardized to 50% trans-resveratrol, a polyphenol studied for antioxidant activity and its relationship to oxidative stress.4,5 |

Why We Carry It
Antioxidants are abundant in a varied plant-forward diet, and food should remain the foundation. Cell Shield RTQ fills a different role: it provides concentrated amounts of three plant-derived compounds—curcuminoids, quercetin and trans-resveratrol—in a consistent, convenient daily serving.
We particularly like that the turmeric isn’t simply turmeric powder. The formula combines organic turmeric root powder with an extract standardized to 95% curcuminoids, while the Japanese knotweed extract is standardized to 50% trans-resveratrol. That makes the formula more specific about what it is actually providing than a generic botanical blend.
That distinction matters because ordinary turmeric contains substantially lower concentrations of curcuminoids than concentrated extracts. Johns Hopkins specifically notes that curcumin supplements can contain much higher concentrations than amounts ordinarily consumed as a culinary spice.1
Why I Recommend It
The effects of free radicals on cell health have been studied for decades, but I’ve noticed that when most people hear the word “antioxidants,” they immediately think of orange juice and vitamin C. In reality, there are many plant foods that provide a wide variety of antioxidant compounds.
That’s what interested me about Cell Shield RTQ. It brings together three potent sources of plant compounds (turmeric, quercetin, and Japanese knotweed) that most people aren’t eating every day. You could certainly get quercetin from foods like capers, onions and kale, add turmeric regularly to your diet, and even eat Japanese knotweed—which has an especially tart, strong flavor somewhat like rhubarb—but realistically, most people aren’t doing all three every 24 hours. I’m reasonably confident Japanese knotweed isn’t on tonight’s menu.
Cell Shield RTQ puts concentrated forms of these plant compounds into two easy-to-take capsules. To me, that’s another example of plant-forward nutrition being presented in a way that doesn’t create extra difficulty in your life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Product Questions
What does RTQ stand for? RTQ refers to the formula’s three featured antioxidant ingredients: resveratrol, turmeric and quercetin.
Why use an extract instead of simply eating turmeric? Turmeric is a nutritious food and can certainly be part of a healthy diet. A standardized extract provides a much more concentrated and consistent amount of curcuminoids than would typically be obtained from turmeric used as a culinary spice. Cell Shield RTQ’s turmeric extract is standardized to 95% curcuminoids.
Where does the resveratrol come from? The resveratrol in Cell Shield RTQ comes from Japanese knotweed extract standardized to contain 50% trans-resveratrol.
Can Cell Shield RTQ replace antioxidant-rich foods? No. We view supplements as complementary to, rather than substitutes for, a varied plant-forward diet. Fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, legumes and other plant foods provide combinations of nutrients and phytochemicals that aren’t replicated by an antioxidant capsule.
Wait…you can actually eat Japanese knotweed? You can. The young shoots are edible and are sometimes compared with rhubarb because of their tart flavor. Whether you want to add Japanese knotweed to your grocery list is up to you. If not, we have capsules.
