April 23, 2009: Not Dying and Other Fun Stuff

In the Woody Allen movie Sleeper, Miles Monroe is awakened around the year 2173 after being cryogenically frozen. People all around him are smoking and eating ridiculously fatty food and scoffing at the people who 200 years before thought those things were bad for the body. In the 1991 movie Defending Your Life, people who have recently died are sent to a purgatory where you can eat anything they want with no weight gain. Comment below if you remember the movie where the Melanie Griffith character is laying on her bed, watching an exercise video and doing leg lifts, all while feeding herself M&Ms.

We love these scenes in movies, because we love to entertain the notion of "What if...". We all know that we need to limit fat and sugar. We hear about inflammation and shunning foods. But when it all comes down to it, if it's taken to the extreme it's kind of like worshipping the concept of "not dying." I can't give my allegiance to that. Besides, it doesn't taste as good.
